stanza

metaphor

def: analogy between two objects or ideas, conveyed by the use of a word instead of another

ex: The boy is a monkey. ---The boy is being compared to a monkey by saying it is another object.

simile

def: figure of speech comparing two unlike things, often introduced with the words "like", "as", or "than"
ex: The toaster is like a dragon.----- Toaster is being compared to a dragon using "like".

Quatrain

Definition: A verse of poetry consisting of four lines, especially one with lines that rhyme alternately.

Ex: Winter by Natalia is a Quatrain because it is a 4 lined poem.

Sonnet

Definition: Fourteen-line rhyming poem with a set structure.

Ex: Lord Vishnu is a type of sonnet.

Allusion

Definition: An indirect reference to someone or something.

Ex: "I have a dream that school will be over in 2012."

This is a reference to MLK Jr.'s speech.

Mood

Definition: The mood is the feeling or atmosphere of a piece.

Ex: Angry, Happy, depressed, Energetic.

These are mood because they tell about how the piece of literature is being portrayed.

Rhyme

Defintion: Is when the end word or a line has the same sound as a line in the peom.

Ex: Dear Slim, I wrote you but you still aint callin'. I left my cell, my pager, and my home phone at the bottom. I sent two letters back in autumn, you must not have got 'em.

This is an example of a rhyme because autumn and got 'em has the same sound.

Personification

Definition: To give a nonliving thing person like qualities.--------poetic device.

Ex: The cloud cried softly on the quiet town. This is personification because it is giving the cloud the ability to cry which it cant actually do.

imagery

def:the formation of mental images, figures, or likenesses of things, or of such images collectively----poetic device.

ex:juicy,stinky,rough,loud,shadowed...
These words are imagery because they appeal to the senses.
